Urgent referrals to St Helier
This information provides an up to date guide to help the local GP community to better explain and ensure understanding of the urgent referral process at St Helier’s Hospital. We hope to improve and expedite urgent referrals to the appropriate speciality, and make local GP colleagues aware of the systems and services available that you can refer to if concerned.
We understand the difficulty in making referrals and getting in touch with the correct team in an appropriate time during busy clinics. If GPs have difficulty with obtaining contact with the correct speciality, it may result in patients sent to ED/SDEC without referral letters or referrals being made.
We in the ED and SDEC Department hope that this information assists and guides you in making you aware of the services available and the pathways to refer patients to the appropriate team.
Once a patient is accepted they will be directed to ED with letter of referral addressed ‘Dear Medical Team’. We ask that the GP discloses the name of the clinician they spoke to, who accepted the referral and address the letter specifically to them. This will help our management of referrals.

Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)
Same day emergency care (SDEC) is a service that provides emergency care to people without the need for an admission to hospital. SDEC is one of the many ways the NHS is working to provide the right care in the right place for people and to improve flow in the emergency department
It encompasses emergency medicine and acute medicine teams working in SDEC, the surgical team in SACU (surgical ambulatory care unit) and the gynaecology team in AGU (acute gynaecology unit).
The aim is to reduce admissions, improve flow in the ED, and for patients to see the right clinicians first time in the right place.
Patients will attend as walk-ins, via ambulance, referrals from 111, or GP referrals.
People with a NEWS2 score of less than 5 can be seen in SDEC.
Abscesses will be seen by the surgical team in SACU in hours and in SDEC out of hours. Excessive vomiting in pregnancy will be seen by the gynaecology team in AGU 8am-4.30pm Monday to Friday. Outside of these times they will go through A&E.
