Suspected cancer referrals
We are committed to making the referral process easy, efficient and reliable for both you as a GP and for your patients.
Our aim is to ensure that all patients first seen appointment on a suspected cancer pathway is managed in line with National Waiting Times Guidance, the NHS Constitution (opens in a new window) and the NHS Operating Framework. All 2wk rule referrals (TWR) from GPs must be made via the e-RS (Electronic Referral System).

GPs are requested to indicate on the referral if the patient has been made aware of the possible diagnosis of cancer and that they have been provided with supportive information. The referral should also signify that the patient will be available within 14 days and that they do wish to consult with a secondary care specialist. Medical history should be provided as part of the referral.
Data will be collected concerning patients who have been referred but are unable to attend an appointment due to other personal commitments such as a holiday. Patient cancellations and patients who do not attend appointments will be managed in accordance with the Trust's Access Policy.
Patients with a rare cancer (eg testicular, leukemia) follow a 31 day pathway to treatment instead of a 62 day pathway. This cohort of patients must be available within seven days from referral.
Children referred on a suspected cancer pathway need to be seen within 48 hours of the referral. GPs must contact the on-call paediatrician prior to referral.
GPs are responsible for ensuring that patients have been added to their practice’s suspected cancer safety netting system.
Please ensure all TWR referrals are made on a TWR Pan London Proforma for suspected cancer.
