HOHC: Leonie Brown, Charge Nurse
Leonie Brown, Charge Nurse
“I cared a lot for others as a child, and my Mother directed me into teaching to give me an opportunity to express that care. I enjoyed teaching, but I wanted to reach more people. For me, health care isn’t just a job, it’s where we’re able to give compassion, care, and comfort without prescription.
“Healthcare workers have the ability to make a meaningful impact on the lives of people in their most vulnerable state. It’s a privilege, and people will never forget how you made them feel. I wanted to make a difference to the lives of others, and I chose to work in Sexual Health so that I could help reduce the stigma still attached to sexual health issues and HIV, correcting misconceptions through education and reassurance.
“I feel a sense of pride working for the Trust, meaningful growth is important and the Trust actively employs values that integrate well with my own sense of purpose. The community feel and inspirational pledges are important for the community we serve. Behaviour standards are key drivers of high quality, which is something I’ve witnessed whilst working at the Trust. If we do nothing, nothing will happen, but the Trust is always doing something to inspire growth.
“I was presented with the Clinical Matron’s Quality Improvement award by our Chief Nurse Arlene in January 2020, who urged me to believe in myself. I held on to Arlene’s words, and I recently received the Florence Nightingale Foundation Scholarship for the Windrush Leadership Program, which has been my proudest moment during my time at Epsom and St Helier, and proves that believing in yourself truly does manifest success.”
