H1 bus service - connecting St Helier and Epsom hospitals

The H1 bus service is for employees of the Trust however if there is capacity, patients and members of the public can travel between our hospital sites on the H1 bus free of charge. The bus stops at St Helier Hospital, Tesco A217, Sutton Hospital, Gateway (Epsom Town Centre, outside the Methodist Church on Ashley Road) and Epsom Hospital. 

Bus stops

The service operates between Epsom, St Helier and Sutton hospitals. Stops are located as follows:

  • St Helier: on the left hand side of the road near the exit from the one way system between C and D blocks
  • A217 (by Tesco)
  • Sutton Hospital (The Malvern centre)
  • Methodist Church, Ashley Road, Epsom
  • Epsom: Outside Mole Valley building

Please note that the Direct Shuttle will be used to backfill the main timetable during staff shortages/breakdown/servicing etc with no notice possible to the Public and the shuttle bus will not wait at the hop on hop off stops, so times are approximate.

Travelling by bus

The following buses stop outside Epsom Hospital:

To travel by bus from St Helier Hospital to Epsom Hospital, take the 157 bus from St Helier Hospital to Morden. From Morden you can take the 293 to Epsom Hospital. Alternatively, you can take the 80 or 280 from Rosehill roundabout to Sutton Station and then catch the 470 to Epsom town centre. 

Travelling by rail

There are direct services to Epsom station from London Waterloo, London Victoria, Sutton, West Croydon and Dorking.

Epsom Hospital is a 15-20 minute walk or a short taxi or bus ride from the station. Bus numbers E5, 166 and 293 depart from Epsom High Street; numbers 408 and 479 from in front of the clock tower.

Travelling by car

Car parking spaces are limited at the hospital. If you do wish to come by car, take the A24 towards Leatherhead from Epsom town centre. The hospital is on your left, after half a mile.

Motorcycle parking

There is a dedicated parking area for motorbikes by the Woodcote Green Road entrance to the hospital. 

There is no charge for motorbike parking and the area has locking posts.

Cycling

A sheltered area for parking bicycles is located near the main entrance to the Derby suite, opposite the visitor car park (Dorking Road entrance).

Further bicycle parking stands can be found outside the main entrance to the Elective Orthopaedic Centre (EOC, formerly known as SWELOC), Denbies wing (Woodcote Green Road entrance).

Travelling by bus

A number of bus routes serve St Helier Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children:

  • 151: Wallington - Sutton - Worcester Park (every 10 minutes peak) 
  • 157: Morden - Croydon - Crystal Palace (every 12 minutes peak)
  • S1: Mitcham - Sutton - Banstead via Wrythe Lane (every 20 minutes peak)
  • S4: Roundshaw - Wallington - Sutton - St Helier (every 30 minutes peak) 
  • 154: Morden - Sutton - West Croydon (every 12 minutes peak)  
  • 164: Sutton - Morden – Wimbledon (every 10 minutes peak)
  • 280: Belmont - Mitcham – Wimbledon (every 10 minutes peak)

Bus numbers 151, 157, S1 and S4 stop directly outside the hospital. All other buses stop at the Rosehill roundabout, a ten minute walk from the hospital.

To travel by bus from Epsom Hospital to St Helier Hospital, you can take the 293 from Epsom Hospital to Morden. From Morden, you can take the 157 to St Helier Hospital. From Morden you can take the 293 to Epsom Hospital. Alternatively, you can take 470 from Epsom town centre to Sutton station and then take the 80 or 280 to Rosehill roundabout. 

Travelling by tube

The nearest underground station is Morden station on the Northern line (fare zone 4).

The 157 bus route connects St Helier Hospital with Morden station and has a daytime frequency of one bus every 12 minutes. The journey itself takes 10-12 minutes.

There is a black cab rank outside the tube station, and the taxi journey takes about five minutes.

Travelling by rail

Sutton station provides the easiest access, with frequent buses to the hospital. It has direct rail services running to and from Epsom, Croydon, London Bridge, London Victoria, Clapham Junction and Wimbledon.

There is also a black cab rank outside Sutton station and the taxi journey takes about 5 minutes.

By bus, it takes approximately 10-15 minutes to the hospital/Rose Hill roundabout:

  • Buses S1 and 151 depart from outside Sutton Library and stop outside the hospital
  • Buses 280 and 164 depart from outside the post office in Sutton and go to the Rose Hill roundabout.

Both St Helier and Carshalton stations are a 25 minute walk from the hospital with less frequent bus connections than Sutton. Both of these railway lines service Sutton railway station.

Travelling by car

From Sutton town centre, follow St Nicholas Way (the BB230) down past the UCI cinema to the bottom of the High Street. Continue on the same road down through Angel Hill to the Rosehill roundabout.  At the roundabout, take the exit onto Wrythe Lane. The hospital is on your right hand side.

From Morden town centre, follow the A297 towards Rosehill.  At the Rosehill roundabout, take the exit onto Wrythe Lane. The hospital is on your right hand side.

Motorbike parking

There is a dedicated parking area for motorbikes in the visitors’ car park, near the entrance to Ferguson House. 

There is no charge for motorbike parking and the area has locking posts.

Cycling

There is a covered bicycle shelter with locking hoops outside the main entrance on Wrythe Lane.

Getting to The Malvern Centre (Sutton Hospital)

Travelling by carFrom Sutton town centre, take the Brighton Road (the B2230) towards Belmont. Turn left onto Cotswold Road (the B2218) and the hospital will be on your left.  From the M25, leave the M25 at Junction 8 and join the A217 to Sutton. Continue for approximately eight miles until you reach a roundabout with a signpost for the B2230 Brighton Road to Sutton. After a small hump back bridge take the first turning on the right into Downs Road, then first left into Cotswold Road -  the entrance to Sutton Hospital is a short distance down on the right hand side.

Car / Motorcycle / Cycle parking:  Parking spaces are limited. Car parking is operated as a pay and display/pay by phone system. Purchase and display a pre-paid ticket at the time of parking from the machine located near the visitors car parking bays. You can only pay with coins at the pay and display machines so please ensure that you have sufficient coinage to cover the cost of your stay, OR, if you are paying by phone using your debit or credit card, call 01483 397 777 and quote the location code 2229, your payment details and your car registration number. (Instructions are available via the signage). 

Disabled parking bays: Normal parking tariffs apply to blue badge holders.

Motorcycle & Cycle parking: There is no charge for motorbike or cycle parking, but please bear in mind that Sutton Hospital does not have a dedicated area with lockable posts to secure your cycle or motorbike.

S1: Banstead-Sutton (stops on Brighton Road, 10 min walk)- Mitcham

S3: Worcester Park-Sutton (stops on Downs Road/Royal Marsden Hospital, 10-15 min walk)

S4: Roundshaw-Wallington- Sutton (stops on Downs Road/Royal Marsden Hospital, 10-15 min walk)

-Sutton-Rose Hill-St Helier            

80: Banstead-Belmont-Sutton Hospital (stops outside on Cotswold Road, 5-10 min walk))-Morden-Hackbridge

280:Belmont-Sutton Hospital (stops on Brighton Road,10 min walk)-Sutton-Rose Hill-Mitcham–Tooting 

420:Sutton (stops outside on Cotswold Road, 5-10 min walk)-Banstead-Preston-Tadworth-Reigate-Redhill-East Surrey Hospital- Whitebushes

Travelling by railSutton Hospital is served by both Belmont and Sutton stations. Belmont station is approx. 10 minute walk from the hospital and has direct services to West Croydon and London Victoria. Sutton station is a 15-20 minute walk or a 5 minute bus journey from the hospital. Bus numbers S1, 80 and 280 depart from outside Sutton station.  There is also a black cab rank outside the station, and a taxi journey takes around 5 minutes.  Direct rail services run to Sutton from Epsom, Croydon, London Bridge, London Victoria, Clapham Junction and Wimbledon.
