Meet the one-to-one midwives
Katie Hamilton, Midwife
I started my journey into midwifery at the age of 18, and have always been passionate about making sure women have a positive experience of childbirth and maternity services.
In 2008, after working in all areas of maternity care, I became an Independent Midwife, working outside of the NHS. Since then I have continued with independent midwifery interspersed with different roles in the NHS, including setting up a home-from-home Birth Centre.
Many women would prefer to get to know just one or two midwives who will look after them throughout pregnancy, and independent midwives have historically provided women with this opportunity.
The development of private midwifery services at Epsom and St Helier has given me the opportunity to continue to provide one-to-one midwifery care while working closely with a Trust I have enjoyed working for greatly in the past, and currently. The one-to-one clinical model not only gives such fantastic outcomes to women and families but provides me with much job satisfaction.
I provide individualised midwifery care, forming a relationship with the women to really make a difference to their birth outcomes, which I feel true midwifery is all about. Outside of midwifery, in my home life, I have two sport-mad children and spend a lot of my spare time cheering them on at various events. I also have an unusual combination of pets, including a dog, a cat and a bird, so my house is like living in a Looney Tunes cartoon! Fortunately, I have a very supportive husband who keeps everything flowing when I get called to births.
At present I am training with Neal’s Yard Remedies as an aroma therapist and massage therapist, as I believe complementary therapies can add to general wellbeing.
I am a member of the Association of Radical Midwives (ARM), Association for Improvement in Midwifery Services (AIMS) and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and hold a diploma in KG Hypnobirthing (see Antenatal and Hypnobirthing) which I use routinely during antenatal care.
Tami Wright, BA BSc RM
I absolutely love being a midwife, and feel so privileged to be able to truly get to know women and their families as they prepare for the birth of a new baby. I came to midwifery later in life, and during the course of my training in a busy London hospital I realised that independent midwifery was where my heart lay. I graduated with a first class Honours degree in Midwifery and since then have worked as an independent midwife in a busy practice supporting women with often complex medical and emotional needs to birth their babies in a variety of settings - at home, in the birth centre or on hospital labour wards. I have additional training in reflexology, intrapartum acupunture and aromatherapy which I regularly incorporate into my care with clients, and spent time in the USA completing an advanced midwifery certificate with Ina May Gaskin and colleagues.
I recently added to my experience as a midwife by becoming a mother myself - which not even being a midwife could have prepared me for! I live in Walton on Thames with my husband, baby daughter and our crazy cat, and love the outdoors and all things crafty.
Angela, Midwife
Being a midwife is a great privilege and a very special vocation; caring for women and families during such a special and life-changing time is a role that I treasure and we aim to provide a level of midwifery care that exceeds your expectations.
Choosing a named midwife to care for you ensures choice, continuity and control; this is hugely important as it enables you to build a strong and trusting relationship with the midwife who will be there to support you as you move through your pregnancy and parenting journey.
I am passionate about midwifery and aim to provide a level of care and support that we would expect for ourselves; we are delighted to be working with Epsom and St Hellier NHS Trust to offer women bespoke private antenatal and postnatal care
