Pelvic floor and perineal clinic
We have a dedicated pelvic floor/perineal clinic in our urogynaecology department, where we are able to provide comprehensive care if you sustained significant perineal injury following childbirth.
The perineal area in women includes the vulva, vagina and anus. Whilst it is common to experience a tear in this area during childbirth and the majority of women make a full recovery, you may have had a more serious tear and need follow-up treatment.
Most of our patients have a good prognosis and are seen in clinic once, where you will have an examination and testing. If these tests are normal and there are no significant symptoms, you will be discharged from the clinic with physiotherapy follow up and advice about maintaining their recovery.
If you have severe perineal scarring or distortion, we can offer you minor surgical procedures which are usually carried out as day cases. You will also be offered counselling with a specialist if you feel it might help you manage some of the difficulties associated with a perineal injury.
If you are pregnant and have previously had third or fourth degree tears, we would recommend you visit at 20-24 weeks gestation in your pregnancy for assessment and planning to minimise the chances of another tear. This consultation would also include deciding the recommended method of delivery ie caesarean section or natural birth.
