Children’s ward team recognised with special award
Staff on a children’s ward at Epsom Hospital have been presented with the Chief Executive’s Award of Excellence in recognition of their commitment to putting the patient first, their exemplary professionalism and team spirit.
Casey Ward cares for young patients aged up to 16 years who have a range of different needs and conditions. Chief Nurse Charlotte Hall, one of several colleagues who nominated the team for the award, explained: “From children living with life-threatening conditions such as leukemia, to those who need to stay in hospital because of a broken bone, the Casey Ward team cares for a group of very complex patients on a day-to-day basis. This can be very rewarding for doctors, nurses and all of the support staff, but it can also present the team with many challenges. This was the case recently when staff went the extra mile to accommodate and support a family in trying to care for their child, who was acutely unwell and had particularly complex needs. All the staff performed magnificently, maintaining professionalism and respect at all times, showing what a strong and cohesive team of professionals they truly are.”
The award, presented by Chief Executive Daniel Elkeles, was accepted by Ward Manager Karen Kilday on behalf of Casey Ward. Daniel said: “The whole team should be extremely proud of the work they do – paediatric care is never easy, regularly presenting nurses and doctors with challenges that can be extremely demanding. As a parent, I know how frightening it can be when your child is hurt or unwell, and the staff here do a wonderful job of not just caring for their young patients, but supporting the parents and loved ones as they go through a very difficult and worrying time.
“I was delighted, and rather inspired, to hear how the team responded during a particularly challenging period on the ward recently – they pulled together exceptionally well, supporting each other and demonstrating professionalism of the highest level.
“This professionalism, combined with their exemplary team working and determination to always put the patient first, no matter what the circumstances, make them worthy recipients of this award.”
The Chief Executive’s Award of Excellence is presented each month to a member of staff nominated by patients, visitors and/or their colleagues. In special instances the Chief Executive will ask that a ward or individual receives special recognition for the work that they have done in the trust.
