Special interests and treatments

Dr Basu is a neurophysiologist who deals with all aspects of the peripheral nervous system. As a neurophysiology consultant, Dr Basu’s work is largely diagnostic - she sees patients and performs and interprets investigations that record activity from the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. These include: nerve conduction studies, electromyography (EMG), evoked potentials (EP) and electroencephalography (EEG). These investigations are used to aid diagnosis in various conditions affecting these parts of the nervous system.

Areas of expertise: motor neurone disease, nerve root compression, nerve injuries from road traffic accident, surgical procedures, demyelinating neuropathies, inherited neuropathies, trapped nerves, muscle disorders and myasthenia gravis. She also frequently gives opinion on child or adult EEG (routine or prolonged) for patients who have epilepsy, encephalitis, and encephalopathy. As well as this, she prepares medico legal reports for nerve injury cases.

Dr Basu has delivered several invited lectures to the learned societies. She teaches Consultants, Registrars, Junior Doctors, Medical Students, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals, as well as being involved in physiologist training within the department. As she says, ‘this really keeps her up to date and very focused on clinical practice’. Dr Basu holds the opinion that patients need to be kept at the centre of the health care universe and not moved to the side.
